CEA Global Campus in Madrid

The CEA Global Campus (GC) in Madrid was founded in 2006 in order to provide North American students with a unique interdisciplinary liberal arts and business education, enhanced by its location in Madrid, Spain. A unique aspect of the CEA Global Campus in Madrid is its association with the International Institute (IIE). The CEA Global Campus Madrid’s relationship with IIE offers students the ability to study at a prestigious institution alongside a diverse group of students from the U.S. and internationally.

IIE also offers U.S. Faculty and Administrators a “campus away from home” and an esteemed location to imbed their own programs through CEA. Along with the diverse services IIE has to offer, will be exclusive CEA services such as access to distinguished faculty and staff. Courses available at the Global Campus are designed to teach students about the diverse history, politics, culture, economics, and art of Spain. Courses are designed with components which expose students to different elements of the city from monuments and museums to businesses, local food markets, and government agencies. Students are encouraged to explore on their own and are challenged to draw connections between the subjects they are studying and their observations outside of the classroom. This will help them not only get to know their new surroundings in Madrid, but also gain insight into how Spain fits into the larger European context.

The mission of the Global Campus is to provide students with the tools and direction to learn about Spain and ultimately reflect on their own country and culture as well. Students are expected to actively participate in their classes, since interaction will be critical for the students' academic success. Faculty selected to teach at the Global Campus are interested in the intellectual, cultural and emotional growth of the students and strive to engage them in lively discussions.

Courses available at the Global Campus have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, faculty appointments have been approved by UNH. After the successful completion of a session at the Global Campus, students will receive credit for their work from UNH. Located in Connecticut, the University of New Haven is a student-focused, comprehensive university and is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The agreement between CEA and UNH follows the highest standards of good practice in education abroad and satisfies the rigorous requirements of the University's institutional accreditor. Therefore, credits earned at the Global Campus are easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Learn more about UNH serving as the University of Record for CEA.

Curriculum at the CEA Global Campus in Madrid is complimented by academic services provided at IIE such as Spanish language tutoring, a library, and student computer stations. We also encourage students to bring their own laptops so that they may utilize the Global Campus’s Wi-Fi internet connection. Being housed in IIE affords students and faculty a better location closer to Spanish universities such as Antonio de Nebrija and Complutense and the ability for increased interaction with non-CEA students and faculty.

Classroom Information

  • Classes are taught by international faculty selected by CEA and approved by UNH.
  • Most faculty are bilingual (Spanish/English) and represent a variety of different backgrounds.
  • Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be administered.
  • Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
  • Classes are specifically offered to be taken with other CEA students and not with native Spanish students.
  • Teaching styles in Spain can be very different from those found in the US or Canada. Be prepared to adapt to the different classroom structures and coursework expectations for your school.
  • The maximum class size for elective courses is 25 students. These small class sizes will enable you to receive more personalized attention from your instructors.

Completion of a course is defined as a receipt of a letter grade (A+ to F) as opposed to Withdrawal or Incomplete.

In order to determine a quality point ratio, each letter grade from a completed course is assigned a quality point value. The quality point value for each grade earned during a semester is multiplied by the number of semester hours assigned to that course. The sum of these points is the total number of quality points earned during the semester. It is divided by the number of semester hours completed to obtain the quality point ratio (QPR).
