The course considers the motivations of terrorists and terrorist groups, and assesses trends in terrorist group strategies, tactics and targets. It also examines counter-terrorist measures taken to suppress these groups. Students will learn to analyze questions such as: What is terrorism? How has it been changed by September 11, 2001? How has September 11 affected the international order? How should liberal democracies deal with terrorism while maintaining their basic freedoms? How can the international system and international law best address the threats posed by terrorism? Because the course is offered in Madrid, students will also gain unique perspectives on the terrorist challenges facing Spain from both Basque separatists and Islamic extremists.
