Academic Focus

The Intermediate Spanish Language & Culture program at the University of Seville is designed for students at the high intermediate level and above who wish to further their Spanish studies and are ready to take content courses taught in Spanish. You will choose four to five courses, combining Spanish language and Spanish-instructed electives in a variety of subject areas. All classes are offered through the university's Department of Philology and Department of Geography & History, located in the historic city center. While you will be in class with other North American students, you will share facilities with host national students and other Europeans, allowing you the opportunity to experience the Spanish university system first-hand.

Program Goals

Through formal and informal learning connected to the host university, city, people and culture; and by applying appropriate cognitive, affective, behavioral, ethical and intercultural tools; students will develop and articulate:

  • discipline-based knowledge in liberal arts and humanities and level-appropriate Spanish language skills for study in these fields;
  • analytic insight into salient cultural differences in the host country’s approach to targeted concepts and  issues within these fields, all considered within the larger context of globalization and;
  • Spanish language and intercultural communication skills.

Schedule Summary

All regular semester courses will meet for 4 hours each week. Classes will be held on Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesday/Thursdays at various times throughout the day. All courses meet for a total of 45 contact hours each semester. Students generally receive 3 semester credits per course, for a total of 12 - 15 credits per semester. However, it is up to the student’s home academic advisor to determine how much credit will be awarded.

Course Registration

Course pre-registration will take place prior to arrival in Seville. Students must enroll in at least four courses each semester and may not enroll in more than five. Students wishing to take more than five courses must have advisor pre-approval and will pay an additional fee. Although there are no required courses, CEA recommends that students take at least one Spanish language course. To aid in the registration process, it is in your best interest to have courses, including alternatives, approved by your academic advisor prior to departure. Any changes to your course selection after registration has been finalized must be coordinated through the Seville program director.

All students enrolled in the Intermediate Spanish Language & Culture program take courses through the University of Seville’s program for foreigners. Students with exceptionally high scores on their online placement exam may elect to take regular university courses with Spaniards. It is recommended that students score at an Advanced level on the placement exam and conduct an interview with the academic staff in Seville to determine an appropriate fit. Please note that regular university courses follow the Spanish academic schedule, which differs from the Intermediate Spanish Language & Culture course calendar. Students seeking this option should speak with a CEA representative.
