CEA Student Life: Seville Local Secrets

As an organization that sends thousands of students abroad each year, CEA has captured a list of local secrets - a collection of discoveries from our students, resident staff, as well as other locals - that make this city unique. We hope you will find the information helpful and, at the every least, an interesting read.

Plaza de San Pedro

In Plaza de San Pedro there is a church (San Pedro) that shows a famous religious tiled painting on one of its walls. Legend says that whoever finds a little sparrow painted on it will be getting married soon (the longer it takes you to find the bird the later you will wed.) Next to the church is a fabulous ice cream shop called Rayas.

Good Places for Coffee

Café de la Prensa on Betis, Café de Indias on Republica Argentina and Avenida de la Constitucion, Madigan's in Plaza de Cuba, Nova Roma on Asuncion 58, Ochoa Cafeteria on Virgen de Lujan 22.

Madigan's has the best tea and is a great place to go and "study" if you want to procrastinate.

Reasonably priced restaurants

La Mia Tana (Alfalfa - €6.20 for a 3 course Italian meal), Las Piletas in Triana, Alibabas on Betis, Ilustre Victima in the Alameda area (on Doctor Letamedni), Restaurante Acropolis on Rosario Vega 10, Sloppy Joe's on Asuncion 62, Patio San Eloy on San Eloy (great montaditos - small sandwiches), Mamma Mia on Betis, there is a great falafel place on Betis - Azteca on Salado - Mexican, Habanita in Alfalfa, Samuria Japanese food on Salado.

Expensive Restaurants

Rio Grande on Betis, San Marco on Betis and Cuna, Best sushi in town at Hotel Alfonso - pricy though, the best paella at La Raza near Parque de Maria Luisa.

Favorite Places for Tapas

Altamira, Bar Bugarin on the corner of Asunció and Fernando IV, Los Coloniales (Alfalafa), Casa Manolo (Alfalfa), some good places behind the Cathedral on Argote de Molina, Bar Salomon on Lopez de Gomara 11, Bar La Raza on Avenida Isabel lo Católica 2, La Leyenda on Avenida Reyes Catolicos, Mestre on General Polavieja (Siepres), Levies on Levies.

Groovy Bars

Queseria, good places in Alfalfa area, Berlin in Alfalfa, Big Ben on Betis, Carboneria on Levies - Barrio de Santa Cruz, Bar Jerusalem on Salado, Trinity Bar - ground floor in Hotel Inglaterra Plaza Nueva. Azucar de Cuba across from Torre del Oro, Mia on Betis - waterfall and awesome cocktails, Café de la Prensa on Betis - the whole area.

Night Hangouts and Discos

Boss on Betis, Alfalfa, Catedral on Cuesta del Rosario, Weekend on Torneo, El Doblon on Thursday nights free salsa classes on Felipe II, FunClub on Alameda de Hercules, Plaza de Cuba, VIPs on Republica Argentina.

Barrio de Santa Cruz

Barrio de Santa Cruz is one of the finest samples of old Jewish quarters in Europe. Its streets and squares are full of legends and history. According to the "Leyenda de la Cabeza de la Judia", in 1481 a Jewish woman by the name of Susona, daughter to a rich banker called Diego Suson (the leader of an upcoming uprising against the Christian authorities), revealed to her Christian lover her father's plans. Her father and others were incarcerated and as a punishment. Susona was decapitated and her head exposed a wall for everyone to see. Today there is a tile with the name Susona and a skull painted on it. Also, in the middle of Barrio de Santa Cruz, there are two huge marble pillars that used to belong to the Hercules Temple.

Sunny Days

A very relaxing and fun idea for sunny days in Seville is to go on the Guadalquivir River and ride a boat. Go with the flow, get a tan, and enjoy the sights!

Summer in Seville gets quite hot, but one of the tricks to avoid some the heat is to always walk on the shady part of the street.

La Isla Magica

Seville is one of the few cities in the world that has an amusement park.

Feria Street Market

The most traditional street market in Seville is set up every Thursday on the Feria Street. It dates back to the 14th century. You can find food, antiques, second hand clothes and collector's items like stamps and cards.

Romance...

A romantic afternoon could consist of visiting the third largest gothic cathedral in the world and then take a horse carriage through the winding roads of the famous Maria Luisa Park.

Animals Galore

On Sunday mornings, there is an animal market in the city center. Here you can see/buy birds, fish, cats, dogs and other animals.
