Tom Melville just completed his first season as men's soccer coach at the Savannah College of Art and Design (NAIA). Melville came to SCAD after serving 13 seasons as head coach of the NCAA Division I Mercer University men's soccer team. Melville is Mercer's all-time wins leader and took the program to two NCAA births in 1999 and 2001.
The former Irish "B" league player and Ulster Polytechnic graduate led the Mercer squad to nine berths in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, three Atlantic Sun regular-season championships (2000-02) and a pair of triumphs at the conference tournament (1999, 2001). From 1999-2005, Mercer went 72-57-10 with only one losing season and one A-Sun finish lower than third.
Melville sports a 181-183-31 mark in 21 overall seasons as a head coach. During his time at Mercer, he has groomed two A-Sun Players of the Year, a trio of A-Sun Freshman of the Year, 15 first team all-conference selections, 21 second team all-conference members, 10 all-freshman award winners, 22 all-tournament honorees, a pair of A-Sun Tournament MVPs and has twice been named the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year (1999, 2002). Two of his 2008 Graduates now play in the A-league.
Prior to his arrival at Mercer, Melville spent eight successful seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. In only his second season at L-R, he helped lead the school to its first-ever NAIA District 26 playoff berth and was named the South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 for his efforts. The highlight of his tenure came during the 1992 season when his squad captured the SAC title.
Coach Melville has been involved with the ODP programs in N. Carolina and Georgia since 1994 and has seen several national youth team players come through his care. In 1996 he was involved with Ghana's preparation for the Atlanta Olympics and in 1987 organized and hosted a major tournament involving the Youth National teams from Brasil, USA, Mexico, Ghana and Nigeria in their preparation for the 1997 Youth World Cup. In 2001 Melville was invited to Brasil to work with their U-17 National team.
Melville and his wife Tanya have two sons, Jordan and Torin.
